Empowering children through FUN physiotherapy.
At Kids Physio Group - Winnipeg, our goal is to support children in doing what they do best – just be kids!
Childhood pelvic health issues are quite common, from bathroom accidents, leaking urine throughout the day, or bedwetting - and all of it can cause quite a stress on children and their caregivers. Our assessments and treatment approach is gentle, involve no internal exam and go through several areas, such as history, physical examination, education, abdominal massage techniques, exercise therapy, and behaviour modification. Our goal is to provide families with efficient planning and tools that allow children to improve their bowel and bladder health. Through our examination, exercises, and treatment plans, our knowledge gives families the confidence to introduce proper toileting positions, examine patterns with food, drinks and sleep, and use techniques to prevent accidents. Our fun and rewarding exercise programs both in and out of the clinic allow the whole family to feel successful!
We are here to ensure your child feels comfortable and empowered to improve their incontinence and regain their confidence — all while making physio fun!
Signs Your Child May Benefit from Pelvic Health Physiotherapy
If your child is over 5 years of age and experiencing any of the following symptoms, we recommend active physiotherapy treatment!
- Enuresis or bedwetting: voiding of urine while asleep.
- Constipation: children who are having issues with bowel movements may have a painful strain, abdominal pain, and feel unwell.
- Overactive bladder: frequent need to urinate which may cause the child to wake overnight.
- Urge incontinence: strong urge to urinate which may result in leaking.
- Postponement: using holding strategies to avoid using the washroom, resulting in leaks.
- Dysfunctional voiding: squeezing of the pelvic floor muscles during voiding, which disrupts the flow of urine, making it challenging for the child to empty successfully.
- Stress or giggle incontinence: urine leaks in response to physical activity.
To pass waste effectively, the pelvic floor muscles must coordinate with the muscles of the bowel and bladder. Many children with incontinence experience dysfunction of their pelvic floor musculature and experience leaks outside of their conscious control. Similarly to when other muscles of the body are not working effectively — physiotherapy can help!

Our physiotherapists use age-appropriate exercises to support a child's pelvic control, none of which are internal. Treatment often involves gentle muscle contractions and relaxation techniques to improve coordination, balance, and strength in the pelvic region.
Pelvic floor dysfunction in children can show up as bedwetting, daytime urinary leakage, constipation, abdominal pain, recurrent urinary tract infections, or difficulty controlling bowel movements. Physiotherapy can help address these issues and build a stronger pelvic floor.
